Environmentalists around Europe have an essential role. They strive to improve problematic conditions by denouncing and proposing sustainable alternatives. However, some are attempting to silence these efforts with SLAPP suits, lawsuits specifically designed to deter public participation. The Ministry of Agriculture of South Tyrol (Northern Italy) has brought criminal court proceedings to the Munich Environmental Institute and the Austrian author Alexander Schiebel because they denounced massive pesticide use in apple orchards in the region. The trial will start on September 15th, signifying a significant challenge for the future of freedom of speech and environmental protection.

BeeLife stands in solidarity with the Munich Environmental Institute and Alexander Schiebel, and brings to the attention this troubling court case.
